In The Garden - Exhibition by Beth Miller & Wilma Cawley at the Q

In the Garden
25 March – 12 April
Opening Night
Tuesday 25 March 5:30pm to 7:30pm Official opening at 6pm by Annette Ellis
For centuries artists of all genres have been inspired by gardens. Some gardens are formal and structured by fences and gates; others are free with foliage rambling over the edges, creating a riot of colour. Rows of slender trees with colourful leaves, seed pods and birds singing their joyous songs; these elements of the garden have served as inspiration for the textile works of Beth Miller and Wilma Cawley.
Both artists started their artistic journey as traditional quilt makers; and both studied at CIT, Wilma in visual art and Beth in printmaking. Beth uses her own photographic images to translate the designs onto cloth using fusible appliqué; many of the designs are hand painted and larger than life. Hand stitching and embroidery as well as machine quilting are used to render the images realistically. Wilma is best known for her contemporary work and surface design. She specialises in collage, beading, hand stitching and embellishment. Sometimes her work may be three dimensional and incorporate paper, rusted fabric, packing tape, Lutradur and Decovil to express her ideas.
Beth and Wilma have worked together for this exhibition using the sights, sounds, textures and delights of the garden to produce a wealth of textural interpretations, and they welcome viewers to join them ‘In the Garden’.
